Izumi Shrine

A Shinto shrine within the Suizenji Joju-en garden, founded in 1878 by the Hosokawa family to commemorate their ancestors. The vermilion main hall stands at the head of the garden's central pond and is one of the most photographed compositions in Kumamoto — Mount Fuji-shaped hill in the foreground, painted shrine behind, mirrored in the water.

Entry is included with the garden ticket. The shrine sells particularly attractive omamori amulets and well-made wooden ema plaques. Visit on a still morning for the best reflections.
