Sakuranobaba Josaien

A reconstructed Edo-period street running along the northern moat of Kumamoto Castle, opened in 2011 as a craft, food, and tourism complex. Wooden shopfronts, slate roofs, and lantern-lined lanes house Kumamoto producers selling local sake, miso, sweets, and ceramics. The Wakuwakuza exhibition hall inside has good displays on the history of the castle and the Hosokawa domain.

Touristy but well done, and a useful one-stop place to try basashi or karashi renkon if you do not have time to seek out specialist restaurants. The viewpoint at the south end gives one of the best photographs of the castle's main keep.
