Suizenji Joju-en Garden

Edo-era strolling garden with miniature Tokaido landscapes

One of Japan's finest traditional strolling gardens, laid out in 1636 by the Hosokawa lords who ruled Kumamoto domain. The design recreates in miniature the 53 stages of the old Tokaido highway between Kyoto and Edo, with a small but perfect replica of Mount Fuji as the centrepiece. The garden is enclosed by a spring-fed pond and is best visited in the morning before tour groups arrive. A small shrine sits at the far end.
