Oita City Art Museum

The Oita City Art Museum is the more low-key cousin of OPAM, tucked into Ueno-no-Mori park a couple of kilometres south of the centre. The collection concentrates on local artists and Buddhist art, with rotating temporary exhibitions that lean toward Japanese painting and craft.

The setting, on a wooded hillside above the city, is part of the appeal. There's a small Japanese garden attached and an open-air sculpture trail in the surrounding park. A taxi from Oita Station takes ten minutes; on foot it's a pleasant uphill walk through quieter neighbourhoods.
