Getting There

Oita Station is on the JR Nippō Main Line and is a major junction. The fastest connection from Fukuoka is the Sonic limited express, which takes a little over two hours from Hakata. From Beppu it is a fifteen-minute hop. Slower local trains also run south down the coast to Saiki and Miyazaki.

Oita Airport sits on the Kunisaki Peninsula about forty kilometres north of the city. It is served by domestic flights from Tokyo (Haneda and Narita), Osaka, Nagoya, and a handful of seasonal international routes. An airport bus connects the airport to Oita Station in about an hour. A hovercraft service across Beppu Bay, once a beloved shortcut, was discontinued and reintroduced — check current status before counting on it.
