Oita city sits at the heart of one of Kyushu's most interesting corners. Beppu, with its hundreds of hot springs and the lurid "Hells", is a fifteen-minute train ride and easily a day out. Yufuin, the chic onsen town in the hills, is an hour and a half by limited express and a half-day in itself if you don't stay overnight. The Kunisaki Peninsula to the north, with its stone Buddhas and remote temples, is harder without a car but rewarding for travellers willing to take buses and walk.
