Oita Station and JR Oita City

Oita Station was rebuilt in 2015 as a large, modern complex called JR Oita City. As well as the railway platforms it contains a department store, a multi-floor shopping mall, restaurants, a cinema, and — most distinctively — a rooftop garden with a hot foot-spa, a children's play area, and a small Shinto shrine, all looking out over the city to the hills beyond.

It is the kind of station-as-destination that is now common in Japan, and a useful base for a day in Oita: leave your luggage in the coin lockers, eat in the food court, and zip up to the roof in late afternoon for the view. The free foot-bath is the unexpected highlight.
