Nishihama Beach

Nishihama Beach on the northern coast of Hateruma is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Japan. The sand is fine and white, the water an extraordinary shade of turquoise, and the beach is sheltered enough to be swimmable for much of the year. Coral reefs extend just offshore and the snorkelling is excellent — you don't need to go far from the beach to find coral gardens and tropical fish.

The beach has minimal facilities deliberately. There is a small hut for bicycle parking and a basic shower, but no beach bars, sun-lounger rentals, or food stalls. Bring everything you need from the village. This is precisely what makes it so good.

A story
Nishihama regularly appears in Japanese magazine polls as the most beautiful beach in the country — a claim hard to argue when you're standing on it. The water is a saturated blue-green that looks almost artificial, and on a weekday outside summer you may have the entire stretch to yourself.
