Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center

A small, government-run visitor centre near Otomi in the south of the island, devoted to the Iriomote cat and the wider Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. Exhibits cover the island's ecosystems, the threats to the cat (mainly road traffic and habitat loss), and the work of monitoring the remaining population.

The cats themselves are nocturnal, shy, and extremely unlikely to be seen by a casual visitor. Stop here first to make sense of what you are looking for in the forest later. Admission is free.

A story
The Iriomote cat, Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis, was only recognised by science in 1967 — astonishingly recent for a wild cat in modern Japan. Fewer than a hundred individuals are thought to survive on the island, all here and nowhere else.
