The Nakama River drains a large area of the southern half of the island and supports an exceptional mangrove forest — wide, dense, and lined with stilt roots. It is the easiest place on Iriomote to see mangroves at close range.
Most visitors take a glass-bottom tour boat from the small marina at the river mouth, but the more rewarding option is a kayak rented in Ohara. Paddle upstream at high tide, drift back with the current, and listen for kingfishers in the canopy.
