Aka Island

Aka Island lies about 4.5 kilometres south-west of Zamami, connected by a footbridge to the tiny island of Geruma. A ferry from Zamami Port makes the crossing in a few minutes, making Aka an easy half-day excursion. The island has a small population, a handful of guesthouses and restaurants, and excellent snorkelling beaches, including Nishihama Beach on the north-east coast which rivals Furuzamami for coral quality and is often quieter.

Aka is home to the endangered Kerama deer, found nowhere else on earth — the deer can often be seen in the island's wooded interior or near the shoreline in the early morning and late afternoon. Aka's diving sites are regarded by some divers as even better than Zamami's main sites, with healthy hard coral gardens and strong turtle populations. The island can also be reached directly from Naha on the same ferries that serve Zamami, but the crossing from Zamami takes only a few minutes.

A story
Aka Island is home to the Kerama deer, a small subspecies of sika deer found only on the Kerama Islands. The deer are believed to have been introduced by humans in ancient times and have adapted to island life over centuries. The population is small but visible — deer wander the island's wooded interior and occasionally come to the water's edge. They are protected and have no fear of people.
