Shodoshima Olive Park makes sense of the island's Mediterranean self-image. Olive trees, herb gardens, a small museum, and a white Greek-style windmill sit above the water, with broad views across the Seto Inland Sea.
It is polished and popular, but not empty branding. Shodoshima has grown olives commercially since the early twentieth century, and the park is the easiest place to see how that crop became part of the island's modern identity.
