Aizu Sazaedo

Aizu Sazaedo is a three-storey wooden temple on Mount Iimori, built in 1796 with a double-spiral ramp inside. Visitors climb up and down without crossing paths, passing thirty-three Kannon images that once stood in for a full pilgrimage.

The building is small, but the design is brilliant. It is also close to the Byakkotai graves, so most visits naturally combine architecture with the city's most famous wartime story.
