Haishiwa Shrine sits at the top of a wooded hill south of Hiraizumi. The approach is part of the experience, with a long stairway climbing through dense trees before reaching the shrine precinct.
It is a quieter stop than Hiraizumi's main temple circuit, but rewarding if you have extra time and want a short climb with a strong forest atmosphere.
