Takkoku no Iwaya is a cliffside temple west of Hiraizumi, built into a rock face and dedicated to Bishamon. It sits outside the main UNESCO cluster, but many travellers find it one of the most memorable places in the area.
The ride or drive out is part of the charm, passing through quiet countryside. Look for the remaining head of the carved stone Buddha on the cliff; earthquakes destroyed the body.
