Zunda is edamame ground into a sweet paste — vivid green, with a grassy, slightly beany flavour unlike any other Japanese sweet. It's Sendai's second great food obsession after gyutan, and you find it on everything: mochi, soft cream, daifuku, lattes, and toast. Stalls selling zunda mochi are clustered in the S-PAL shopping complex at Sendai Station and throughout the arcades.
Zundamochi Rikyu, with several outlets around the station, is the most prominent specialist. The mochi are made fresh throughout the day — order at the counter and eat standing. The zunda soft cream from the same chain (and from numerous nearby rivals) is worth trying even if soft-serve feels redundant when you've had the real thing. Prices are modest; a serving of three mochi costs around 500 yen.
