Quweira Solar Power Plant

One of Jordan's largest solar installations, visible as a dark expanse from the Desert Highway

About five kilometres west of the Desert Highway, spread across the stony plateau south of Quweira, the Quweira Solar Power Plant covers a vast area with photovoltaic panels. The installation has a capacity of around 103 MW, making it one of the largest solar farms in Jordan and a significant piece of the country's push to generate more of its electricity from renewables. From the highway you can see the dark geometric mass of panels against the pale desert floor — a striking industrial sight in an otherwise empty landscape.

This is not a formal tourist attraction and there is no visitor access. But if you are passing on the Desert Highway and the light is right, it is worth slowing down to look. The scale is hard to appreciate from a moving vehicle; pull over at a safe spot and you will get a better sense of just how large the installation is. The contrast between the high-tech panels and the ancient desert around them is one of those unexpected sights that makes overland travel worthwhile.
