Independence Park

The largest park in the city, opened in 2011 on the 20th anniversary of Kazakh independence. Wide tree-lined avenues, ornamental fountains, an artificial lake, and a set of monumental sculptures that walk through the official version of Kazakh national history — Saka warriors, the Karakhanid period, the union of the three hordes at Ordabasy, the road to independence.

The park is at its most pleasant in the cool of the early evening, when the fountains run and the residents of the surrounding apartment blocks come out to walk. A short ride south of the centre by taxi or bus.
