Frunze Museum

Address Frunze Street 364, Bishkek

A perfectly preserved time capsule of Soviet hero-worship. The museum tells the life story of Mikhail Frunze, the Bolshevik general who led the Red Army victory in Turkestan during the Russian Civil War, and after whom the city was renamed Frunze from 1926 to 1991. Exhibits run from his peasant childhood in Pishpek through his rise as a revolutionary commander to his early death (almost certainly arranged by Stalin) in 1925.

For a visitor curious about how the Soviet Union worked and how it remembered itself, this is one of the best places in Central Asia. The displays have not changed substantially since the 1980s.

A story
The museum is built around the small mud-brick cottage where Mikhail Frunze was born in 1885. After the Bolshevik general died, the city of Pishpek was renamed Frunze in his honour and kept the name from 1926 until independence in 1991. The cottage sits inside the museum hall like a Russian Easter egg — a 19th-century peasant house entombed inside a 1960s Soviet pavilion.
