The country's main museum, set in a hulking marble building on the north side of Ala-Too Square. The collection moves from prehistoric stone tools and Scythian gold through nomadic Kyrgyz material culture — yurts, saddles, embroidered felt — to the Soviet and post-independence periods. A long renovation closed the museum for nearly a decade; it reopened in 2021 with the displays substantially modernised.
For a quick visit, the third-floor Soviet halls — preserved socialist-realist murals on the ceilings — are the most distinctive thing the museum has to offer. The nomadic-era halls on the second floor are the most useful for travellers about to head into the mountains.
