Victory Square

Address Yusup Abdrakhmanov Street, Bishkek

A wide concrete-and-marble plaza built in 1985 to mark the 40th anniversary of Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The centrepiece is a 25-metre arch of three steel columns shaped to evoke a yurt frame, with an eternal flame and a bronze figure of a Kyrgyz mother holding a bowl at its base — a memorial to the more than 360,000 Kyrgyz who fought in the Red Army during the war, of whom roughly 130,000 did not return.

On the morning of 9 May (Victory Day) the square fills with veterans, families with carnations, and military music. The rest of the year it is a quiet place to stop while walking between the central squares.
