Phonsavan is a base, not a destination in itself. The Plain of Jars is the reason to come — a UNESCO-listed scatter of giant stone vessels across the upland savanna, the most enigmatic archaeological site in Southeast Asia. The town also gives access to the secret war story: bomb craters, UXO clearance work, and the MAG visitor centre. Half a day in town and two full days on the surrounding plateau is about right.
