Blue Lagoon 1

The most popular of Vang Vieng's spring-fed swimming holes, with startling turquoise water below limestone cliffs

Blue Lagoon 1 sits at the base of the karst cliff below Tham Phu Kham cave, and most visitors combine the two in a single trip. The lagoon itself is a natural pool fed by underground springs, and the water remains a consistent turquoise colour year-round. Trees shade the edges and there are platforms for jumping.

Weekends and Chinese New Year holidays bring large crowds, mainly domestic Lao and Chinese tourists. If you can visit on a weekday morning you'll have a very different, quieter experience. The site is fenced and charges a small entry fee. Food vendors sell drinks and snacks near the entrance.

A story
The vivid colour of Blue Lagoon 1 comes from the same limestone geology that built the karst mountains — dissolved calcium carbonate in the spring water scatters light in a way that makes the pool appear almost unnaturally blue. Several smaller lagoons have been given numbers (Blue Lagoon 2, 3) but this is the original and still the best. The rope swings and zip line that extend over the water are not operated by anyone in particular; swim at your own judgement.
