The riverside bar scene that made Vang Vieng infamous in the early 2000s has been scaled back — the Lao government shut down the most raucous tubing bars after a string of accidents — but a relaxed drinking culture remains. Sunset drinks on a terrace over the Nam Song, watching the karst silhouettes go orange and pink, is one of the better things you can do here.
