Scandinavian Bakery

Vientiane institution for European pastries and decent coffee

A fixture on the Nam Phu fountain square for over twenty years, the Scandinavian Bakery is where expats and travellers go for a familiar breakfast. The bread is real, the croissants are flaky, and the coffee is reliable — none of which are guaranteed in Laos.

It is not authentic Lao food, obviously. But after a few weeks on rice and noodles a danish with strong filter coffee can feel like a small miracle, and the upstairs balcony is a pleasant place to watch the square. Lunch sandwiches and salads are also on offer. Open from 7am.
