Lebanon's premier archaeological museum, covering prehistory through the Ottoman period. Housed in a handsome 1930s building on the former Green Line — the divide between Christian and Muslim sectors during the civil war — the museum's staff famously encased the larger sculptures in concrete to protect them during the fighting. Highlights include the Sarcophagus of Ahiram (10th century BC) and an extraordinary collection of Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine artefacts. Admission is cheap.
