Alor Setar Tower is the modern landmark above the old centre. Its observation level is useful because Kedah is flat: from above, the city, paddy fields, and distant limestone hills fall into place.
It is not subtle architecture, but it does its job. Go early or late in the day for softer light and clearer views over the rice-bowl landscape.
