Alor Setar

Kedah's rice-bowl capital, with royal halls, black-domed mosques, and paddy-field horizons.

Alor Setar is the capital of Kedah, but it feels less like a hard-edged administrative city than a Malay royal town set in rice country. Paddy fields press close to the outskirts, while the centre gathers mosques, royal buildings, markets, and a tall viewing tower into a walkable cluster.

The heritage core around Zahir Mosque, Balai Besar, and Balai Nobat is the best place to start. It gives you Kedah's courtly side without making the city feel like an open-air museum.

The other identity is rice. Paddy Museum sits north of town among fields and is more memorable than its plain name suggests. Add Alor Setar Tower for orientation and Pekan Rabu for local shopping, and Alor Setar is easily worth a day between Penang, Langkawi, or the Thai border.
