Balai Besar

Kedah royal audience hall dating back to Alor Setar's eighteenth-century founding.

Balai Besar is the royal counterpoint to Zahir Mosque. Its timber details, layered roof, and open ceremonial setting show the courtly side of Kedah better than any museum label could.

You may only be able to admire it from outside, but that is enough if you see it as part of the square. Balai Nobat, the state gallery, and the mosque are all close by.

A story
Balai Besar began as the Kedah sultan's audience hall in 1735. It was damaged during Bugis and Siamese attacks, then rebuilt for royal ceremonies, which explains why the building feels both ceremonial and battle-worn in the city's memory.
