Kedah's black-domed state mosque, one of Malaysia's most graceful Islamic landmarks.
Zahir Mosque is Alor Setar's finest building. White walls, black domes, and slender minarets give it a calm, balanced look, especially from the open ground around the royal quarter.
Visitors should dress modestly and avoid prayer times if hoping to look inside. Even from outside, it is the building that fixes Alor Setar in the memory.
A story
Zahir Mosque was completed in 1912, but its site carries older royal memory: it stands near the former cemetery of Kedah warriors who died resisting Siam in the nineteenth century. That mix of beauty and state history is why it matters beyond its postcard view.
