Mount Kinabalu

Mount Kinabalu is Borneo's signature climb and the highest mountain in Malaysia. The standard ascent is non-technical but serious: hikers climb through forest to a mountain hut, then start before dawn for the granite summit plateau.

Permits and beds are limited, so book early. The climb is best approached from Kota Kinabalu, but do not underestimate the altitude, rain, or the cold near sunrise.

A story
Kinabalu rises so abruptly that early naturalists treated it as a world stacked in layers: lowland rainforest, cloud forest, alpine scrub, and bare granite within one climb. That vertical compression is why the mountain is one of Southeast Asia's great biodiversity sites.
