Batu Buruk Beach

Batu Buruk is the city beach of Kuala Terengganu, a long stretch of South China Sea coast a few kilometres north of the city centre, beyond the Terengganu Drawbridge. It is not a swimming beach by most standards — the surf can be rough and the water murky — but as a place to walk in the evening breeze, watch fishing boats, and eat seafood from the stalls that line the promenade, it serves perfectly well. The beach is wide, sandy, and lined with casuarina trees.

The seafood stalls and night market along the beachfront are at their busiest in the evening, when families and young people from the city come to eat and stroll. This is where to try Terengganu's keropok in its natural habitat, alongside freshly grilled fish and cold coconut drinks. The beach is popular with kite flyers in the late afternoon — Terengganu is one of Malaysia's kite-making centres, and the traditional wau bulan (moon kite) is flown here as a matter of cultural pride rather than tourism.
