Bukit Puteri (Princess Hill)

Bukit Puteri (Princess Hill) is a small but steep hill rising directly above the old town, commanding views across the Terengganu River mouth and out to the South China Sea. The climb takes about 15 minutes and is rewarded with wide panoramas of the city, the river, and on clear days the offshore islands. The hilltop contains a lighthouse, a flagpole, old cannon, a mausoleum for members of the royal family, and the historic Genta bell.

The site has been used for strategic purposes since at least the 18th century, and the combination of fortifications, tombs, and the working lighthouse gives it an agreeable historical layering. Entry is free. The path up is paved and manageable, though the hill is steep enough to require a reasonable level of fitness. Come in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat; the views at sunset are particularly good.

A story
Bukit Puteri was fortified by the Terengganu sultans as a strategic lookout over the river mouth, and the cannon placed here can still be seen. The hill was also used as a signal station: a large bell known as the Genta was rung to announce the arrival of the sultan and to signal the start and end of Ramadan. The bell dates from at least the 18th century and is one of the oldest surviving artefacts of the Terengganu sultanate.
