Kundasang War Memorial is the town's most important stop, a set of terraced gardens dedicated to the Australian and British prisoners of war who died in Sandakan and on the forced marches toward Ranau in 1945, as well as the Sabahans who tried to help them. It is quiet, well kept, and emotionally direct.
The gardens represent Australia, England, Borneo, and contemplation. Go slowly; the names and the mountain views make more sense if you treat it as a place of memory rather than a quick photo stop.
