Kundasang sits high in Sabah's Crocker Range, close enough to Mount Kinabalu that the mountain feels like part of town. The air is cool by Borneo standards, the roads curl through vegetable farms and steep green slopes, and the clouds decide how much of Kinabalu you get to see on any given hour.
This is not a polished resort town. Its appeal is simpler: morning views, roadside produce stalls, dairy pastures with a huge granite peak behind them, and one of Sabah's most moving Second World War memorials. The Kundasang War Memorial gives the place weight; it commemorates the prisoners and local people caught up in the Sandakan death marches.
Kundasang also works as the most natural base for Kinabalu Park. Stay here if you want to be near the park entrance without sleeping in Kota Kinabalu, or if you want a slow day of short walks, farm stops, and viewpoints after a serious mountain itinerary.
