Three connected 19th-century townhouses on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, preserved as they were when a wealthy Peranakan (Straits Chinese) family lived in them. The Baba Nonya — the Straits-born Chinese who blended Malay and Chinese culture over centuries — developed a distinctive material culture, and this museum shows it in full: elaborate mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture, antique porcelain, embroidered wedding costumes, and ornate silver ceremonial objects.
Guided tours run on a fixed schedule (roughly every 45 minutes); the guide is essential for understanding the significance of what you are seeing. The architecture itself — a narrow deep plan with a succession of rooms around interior courtyards — is typical of Peranakan townhouses built for tropical ventilation and for the social rituals of merchant life.
