Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park

Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park protects a chain of offshore reefs stretching south of Miri, accessible by boat from the city. Established in 2007, it is Sarawak's largest marine park and offers some of the best diving on the island of Borneo, though it remains far less visited than better-known Indonesian or Filipino sites.

Depths range from 7 to 50 metres, with visibility typically between 10 and 30 metres. The best conditions run from late March through November; the northeast monsoon season (roughly December to February) brings rougher seas and reduced visibility. Notable dive sites include Anemone Garden, Seafan Garden, and Grouper Patch Reef, which lives up to its name. Napoleon wrasse, sharks, clown fish, sea horses, and giant clams are regularly sighted, along with nudibranchs and feather stars. The park also has several WWII wreck dives, the most visited being the Atago Maru.

Dive operators in Miri run day trips to the park; the journey takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on which reef you are visiting.

A story
Established in 2007, Miri-Sibuti is Sarawak's largest offshore national park and one of Malaysia's most recently protected marine areas. The Atago Maru wreck — a Japanese vessel sunk during World War II — now lies at 27 metres and has become one of the most popular dive sites, covered in soft corals and inhabited by large schools of fish.
