Getting There

Almost everyone arrives at Velana International Airport (MLE) on Hulhulé Island, a short ferry ride from central Malé. It's the country's only international hub. A new Terminal 1 opened in mid-2025; some carriers still use the older terminal, so check which one applies to your flight before you land.

Direct long-haul flights operate from the UK (London Heathrow via Virgin Atlantic and British Airways), Europe, the Middle East, and across Asia. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and flydubai all serve Malé, making the Gulf the most popular hub for connections. From Asia, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, and Air India connect directly. SriLankan Airlines runs the most frequent service — over 21 flights a week — making Colombo a convenient transit point.

There are no visa requirements on arrival. All nationalities receive a free 30-day visitor stamp at the airport. You'll need a return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation — a resort confirmation, guesthouse booking, or even an email exchange works fine. If you need longer, extensions up to 90 days are granted by the Department of Immigration on production of sufficient funds and a confirmed place to stay.

All arriving passengers must complete an online traveller declaration (IMUGA) within 96 hours before travel. It takes a few minutes and is free.
