Bolifushi

Private South Malé Atoll island resort set in a shallow reef lagoon near the airport

Bolifushi is a small private island in South Malé Atoll, close enough to the airport for a short speedboat or catamaran transfer but far enough from Malé to feel properly lagoon-bound. It is not a village island and it does not have an independent backpacker scene; the island is essentially a single high-end resort set in a shallow reef lagoon.

That makes Bolifushi easy to understand. You come here for overwater villas, calm swimming, spa days, snorkelling from the house reef, and boat-based diving in the South Malé channels. If you want local cafes, ferries, and Maldivian island life, look instead to Maafushi or another inhabited island in the atoll.

The practical advantage is access. Transfers are short by Maldivian standards, so Bolifushi suits travellers who want the private-island version of the Maldives without spending half a day on a seaplane connection.

Getting There

Bolifushi is reached by arranged boat transfer from Velana International Airport near Malé. The crossing is short for the Maldives, usually around 20 to 30 minutes depending on the boat and sea conditions.

There is no public ferry pattern useful to independent travellers. Transfers are normally organised through the island resort, so confirm timing before booking tight arrival or departure connections.

Things to Do

Bolifushi is about the lagoon rather than sightseeing. Snorkel the house reef, book dives in the South Malé channels, take a sunset cruise, or do very little beside water that looks almost unreal when the light is right.

For cultural wandering, markets, or local restaurants, this is the wrong island. Treat Bolifushi as a private-island beach stop and build any wider Maldivian exploring around Malé, Maafushi, or other inhabited islands.
