South Malé Atoll

Atoll south of Malé with resort islands, local villages, and easy speedboat access from the airport.

South Malé Atoll (Kaafu South) sits directly south of Malé and the main airport atoll, separated by the navigable Vaadhoo Kandu channel. It is quieter than its northern neighbour, with around 30 resorts spread across smaller islands and a string of inhabited local islands at its eastern edge, but it stays within easy speedboat distance of the airport — most transfers run 45 minutes to an hour.

The atoll is best known for its dive sites — wall dives, channels, and underwater pinnacles ("thila") where pelagics gather on the incoming tide. Kandooma Thila and the Embudhu Express are two of the most-visited drift dives in the Maldives. Sharks, eagle rays, and turtles are commonplace; manta rays come through seasonally.

Snorkelling off the resort house reefs is consistently good. For travellers on a smaller budget, the local island of Maafushi at the atoll's eastern edge has the longest-established guesthouse scene in the country and is a useful base for day trips to dive sites, sandbanks, and uninhabited islands.
