Zayain Khuree is the historic heart of Tsetserleg. The monastery was founded in the 17th century and partly survived the purges that destroyed so many Mongolian religious sites; today its restored halls serve as the Arkhangai museum.
The appeal is both architectural and human. You see old wooden temple rooms, Buddhist images, local ethnographic displays, and the sense of how a provincial monastic centre once organised life in the valley. It is the first place to go in town.
