Dadal

Dadal is a small sum (district centre) in the northeastern corner of Khentii province, reached via a long, rough track from Undurkhaan or over the mountains from Binder. Most visitors come because the town sits at the confluence of the Onon and Balj rivers, in the territory traditionally identified as the birthplace of Temujin — who would become Genghis Khan.

The area holds a stone memorial and nearby Deluun Boldog hill, considered the most likely birthsite by Mongolian historians. The Onon River here is a clean, swift mountain river — excellent for fishing, particularly trout and grayling — and the surrounding forest feels entirely different from the open steppe farther west. Getting here without a guide and a 4WD is inadvisable; the roads can disappear entirely in wet conditions.

A story
Dadal's claim to be the birthplace of Genghis Khan is based on the 13th-century Secret History of the Mongols, the oldest surviving literary work in the Mongolian language. The text places his birth on the banks of the Onon River in 1162, though scholars continue to debate the exact site. A stone memorial was erected here in 1962 to mark the 800th anniversary of his birth.
