Undurkhaan, recently renamed Chinggis Khot (Chinggis City) in honour of its historical significance, is the provincial capital of Khentii and the main staging point for any journey into the province. It is a small, functional aimag centre of around 20,000 people with basic guesthouses, a market, fuel, and a museum covering local history and the Genghis Khan connection.
The Khentii Aimag Museum holds ethnographic collections and materials related to the province's nomadic heritage, and a large bronze statue of Genghis Khan dominates the central square. From Undurkhaan, paved road runs back to Ulaanbaatar (roughly 330 km to the west), but onward travel to Dadal or the national park requires a 4WD and substantially more time. The town makes a reasonable overnight stop before pushing deeper into the province.
