Hamriin Hiid is the main reason travellers stop in Sainshand. The monastery stands about 50 km south of town in open desert, associated with the 19th-century lama, poet and teacher Danzanravjaa.
The buildings are modest, but the setting is memorable: low temple roofs, prayer flags, sand, rock and a horizon that seems to go on forever. Local pilgrims come to pray, meditate and absorb the place's energy. Hire a car in Sainshand and allow half a day.
