Sainshand is the capital of Dornogovi province, a small Gobi city on the Trans-Mongolian Railway between Ulaanbaatar and the Chinese border at Zamiin-Uud. It is dry, windswept and practical, the kind of place where the railway station is as important as the main square.
The town itself has a few museums and monuments, but most travellers come because Sainshand is the base for Hamriin Hiid, a desert monastery and pilgrimage site about 50 km south. The trip out crosses open Gobi country, and the sense of space is half the point.
Sainshand is not a soft introduction to Mongolia. Summers are hot, winters are severe, and the wind can make even short walks feel like work. But it is an honest Gobi stop, easy to reach by train, and useful if you want to break the long journey between the capital and the border.
