Kalaw Market

Kalaw's central market is one of the most ethnically diverse in Shan State. On market days — which rotate on a five-day cycle shared across the surrounding villages — Pa-O women in black dress and indigo turbans arrive alongside Danu traders, Taung Yo farmers, and Indian shopkeepers whose families have been in Kalaw for generations. The range of highland vegetables is extraordinary: wild mushrooms, fresh turmeric, bitter gourds, and a dozen varieties of greens that rarely make it to the lowlands.

The permanent part of the market operates daily around the central covered hall. Vendors set up before dawn and the action is largely over by mid-morning. Come early for the best produce and to watch the town come alive. The market is also a good place to find dried spices, traditional herbal medicines, and the small woven bags made by Pa-O women.
