Trekking to Inle Lake

The three-day walk from Kalaw to Inle Lake is the most popular trek in Shan State, and for good reason. The route drops through pine forest and terraced fields, passing through Pa-O and Danu communities where overnight stays in village monasteries or farmhouses are often arranged. Guides are essential — not just for navigation but for the introductions and translation they provide. Most guesthouses in Kalaw can set you up with a licensed guide.

The trek is not strenuous by Himalayan standards, but covers around 60 kilometres over three days, with some long uphill stretches. The reward is access to landscapes and communities that a bus journey to Inle simply cannot offer. Two-day versions covering the same ground by vehicle for part of the route are also available for those with less time. Prices include guide, food, and accommodation; expect to pay around $30-40 per person per day with a small group.

A story
The multi-day trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake follows routes that Pa-O and Danu villagers have walked for centuries. Until the 1990s almost no foreigners made this journey; today it remains one of the few trekking routes in Myanmar where the villages you pass through feel genuinely unchanged by tourism.
