Taunggyi's most rewarding experience is its market — a vast, colourful gathering that draws ethnic groups from across the Shan hills and is one of the most vivid daily markets in Myanmar. The Shan State Museum provides context for the diversity you see around you. The Shwe Pone Pwint Pagoda on the hilltop above the town offers panoramic views over the plateau.
Taunggyi is most commonly used as a base for visiting Inle Lake, an hour's drive south, but the town itself rewards an overnight stop.
