Gorakhnath Temple

The Gorakhnath Temple sits within the Gorkha Durbar complex on the hilltop, dedicated to the sage-deity Gorakhnath who is considered the patron deity of the Shah royal family and, by extension, of Nepal itself. The temple's inner sanctum contains a natural rock formation said to be Gorakhnath's footprint, and it remains an active pilgrimage site — you will often find sadhus and devotees on the terraces alongside the tourists and hikers.

Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum of the temple, but the outer courtyard and the terraces around it are accessible and give a clear view of the intricate roof carvings and the ceremonial platforms used during major festivals. The temple architecture is classic Newar in style, with multi-tiered pagoda roofs, gilded tympanum panels, and carved wooden struts depicting deities and mythological scenes. The best time to visit is early morning, when the light is soft and the devotional atmosphere is strongest.

A story
The Gorakhnath Temple is the tutelary shrine of the Shah dynasty. Every Shah king was required to perform rituals here before ascending the throne, and the current Hindu faith of the Nepalese state traces much of its formal identity back to this mountain-top complex.
