Koryo Museum

Exceptional Koryo celadon in a Confucian academy

The best museum in North Korea outside Pyongyang, housed in the former Sungkyunkwan Confucian academy — a handsome complex of courtyards and wooden halls. The collection spans Koryo-dynasty celadon pottery, bronze bells, coins, and stone Buddhist sculpture. The celadon in particular is exceptional: the muted blue-green glaze and inlaid floral patterns of 10th–14th century Korean ceramics reached a peak of refinement that was never quite matched again. Labels are in Korean and sometimes Chinese, but the objects speak for themselves.

The academy grounds are pleasant to walk through even if you tire of the artefacts.

A story
The Sungkyunkwan academy where the museum is housed was established in 992 AD to train Koryo officials in Confucian scholarship. The same institution later inspired the Joseon-era Sungkyunkwan in Seoul, meaning the dynasty that replaced the Koryo modelled its own academy on a Koryo precedent.
